The story of Jimmy’s Jade: I was born and raised in Akaroa, New Zealand. When I was 11 years of age my parents took a drive to the West Coast (Hokitika) to have a look at a shop they had just bought. When I was there, I got a bit bored helping set up the shop with them, so I asked Dad if I could go for a walk around the town. With a bit of persuasion he said yes. I think I walked around all the shops in Hokitika, and I also walked along the beach. As far back as I can remember I’ve always liked stones  It wasn’t long before I started looking for Jade/Pounamu (greenstone) on the Hokitika beach. It was then, when I remembered a shop we visited a few years prior. I started going in there to ask if the stones I was collecting from the beach were Jade. Almost always the answer was no it’s not. However, after a few more weeks going into the shop, Steve (shop owner) asked if I would like to start polishing some stones for him. It did not take much thought to say yes. As months went on, he started paying me to polish the stones, and then after about 5 months I asked if I could (whenever I was in Hokitika) start to carve in his studio and then sell the pendants in his shop Bonz’n’Stonz for a commission. He agreed to this as well as teaching me when I needed help. While I carved, he also was busy carving so I tried not to bug him too much.
Fast forwarding a few years…and now I am working part time from home in my Jade studio, and selling in shops around New Zealand. This is the story of how I became the Jade carver and where I am today.
